You’ve probably just read Part I of how to get the most out of each physical therapy sesh, so let’s not waste any time and get right into Part II.  Here are 5 more tips to keep the momentum going!

1.   Commit to your sessions

Like we mentioned, you’re only with us for a short amount of time–usually just an hour or so. All we ask is that you really give it your best during that hour, for each and every session. Trust us, we know how difficult physical therapy can be. We see it every day. But we also see the amazing results of hard work and commitment–people like you who are able to move about freely and without pain again, who are able to walk again after an accident, who feel better and stronger than ever after PT. So, for the brief period of time we’re together, just give it 100% every time…it will pay off in the end.

2.   Ask questions

If you’re ever unsure of what we’re doing or want more information before we get started, please ask! We love questions! And, not to brag, but we are PT experts, so we’re happy to answer any question you might have about your physical therapy plan, exercises, techniques, pain, treatment…whatever you can think of! Plus, we’re pretty friendly and love getting to know our clients, so feel free to ask any questions you have!

3.   Don’t overdo it

Yes, it’s tempting to want to just push, push, push as hard as you can to get PT over and done with more quickly. We understand. The problem with that approach? Nearly every time, a person who overdoes their work or PT winds up either aggravating or reinjuring themselves–or injures something entirely different! And guess what? All that does is send you right back to square one. Overdoing your PT can very easily erase any progress you already made, which just drags the whole process out even longer. And by overdoing it, isn’t that what you were trying to avoid in the first place? There’s a rhyme and reason for the pace at which we’re working, and sticking to that is the best course of action.

4.   Set goals

Goal setting is huge because it gives you small rewards as you work toward the bigger picture–full recovery. Along the way, set reasonable goals that you can attain with consistent work (without overdoing it!). You’ll feel more confident about the process–and yourself–and you’ll keep progressing toward the ultimate goal. Of course, if you’re unsure what a reasonable goal looks like, that’s totally normal! Just ask, and we’ll be happy to plot out some goals for you throughout the treatment plan.

5.   Be prepared to get pampered

Yes, you read that correctly. Sure, PT is hard work, but there are probably going to be some sessions where you simply need to relax and let the environment or the physical therapist do all the work. For example, one session might involve you soaking in a hot tub to relieve soreness. Another might have you on the table receiving relaxing, soothing massage therapy. Consider it a reward for your commitment!

By following these 10 simple steps, you’ll get the most out of your physical therapy time and chart a course for success! Physical Therapy NOW is here to help heal, manage pain and/or move past all types of pain and injury. Call us today at 800.481.4582 to set up a consultation!
