You always hear about making sure you get to the doctor for your checkups.  But – does that same rule of thumb apply to physical therapy, too?  Of course, it does!  We can give a long list of reasons why you need to keep your PT appointments, but for now, we’ll keep it to our top three reasons – especially if you need therapy to heal from injuries stemming from a car accident.

Reason #1: The PT records are proof of your injuries

Do you know that if you’ve been in a car accident and need physical therapy, the at-fault driver’s insurance company will – in many states – cover the cost of your injuries?  In some states, it’s YOUR OWN insurance that will cover the cost of your injuries. Regardless, someone’s insurance company will have to pay!  But here’s the thing: the insurance company isn’t in the business of wanting to pay you money.  As a matter of fact, the adjusters are often trained to offer as little as possible, and they’ll justify doing so if it doesn’t seem like you NEED physical therapy.

So, how do we prove that your injuries are worth physical therapy?  Your PTs will take meticulous notes that are often used in determining how much is paid out to the injured to cover the cost of PT and in the settlement.

Reason #2: Keeping your appointments shows you need support to recover

Not only can the notes and records from your physical therapy be used to show proof of your injuries, but how much PT you need as a result of those injuries is also a factor.  Do you need just a few appointments to heal, or will your rehab be longer?  And how much are these injuries impacting your life?  An insurance adjuster might argue that if you’re skipping appointments often and not rescheduling, “the injuries must not be all that bad.”  And then they could use that argument to offer you a smaller settlement amount if you were the one injured in a car accident because of someone else’s negligence. Keep those appointments to get the support you need to heal and recover!

Reason #3: PT – It’s there to help YOU!

And speaking of your recovery, isn’t that the whole point of physical therapy?  Yes, the records and notes can be used for insurance purposes – especially when injuries are related to a car accident.  However, physical therapy is there to help you heal and recover from your injuries!  Use up all of your physical therapy appointments so you can heal and get back to your life as pain-free and as quickly as possible!
