Do I Need a Prescription for Physical Therapy in Miami?

There was a time when, if you had an injury or a surgery that required physical therapy, a doctor would write you a prescription.  That prescription was the “golden ticket” to your regaining your mobility, health, and wellbeing because insurance wouldn’t cover physical therapy unless a doctor wrote that invaluable prescription.  Back then, the answer to the question “Do you need a prescription for physical therapy,” was yes.

However, those days are long gone.  Now, Florida residents can get physical therapy without a doctor’s prescription by way of Florida Direct Access.  This program changes everything for Florida residents and the answer to that previous question: “Do you need a prescription for Physical Therapy in Miami?”  The answer now is no, and Florida residents are making the most of it.

How Does Direct Access Work?

No matter what your injury or issue, a physical therapist in Miami can now implement a treatment plan for 30 days in the state of Florida, whereas previously, this was not an option.  The only way a patient could get physical therapy back then was via a doctor’s orders.

Now, with Direct Access, the benefits are wide-ranging.

The doctors:

If a 30-day treatment plan is enough time for a patient’s rehabilitation, the doctor no longer has to spend valuable time with that patient (that could benefit other patients with more demanding needs).  A physical therapist can create and implement a effective treatment plan that would be no different than if the doctor had written a prescription for physical therapy.

The insurance company:

The insurance company no longer has to wait for the prescription from the doctor’s

The patient

The patient is no longer burdened with a trip to the doctor’s office for a problem that can be resolved directly with a physical therapist.  Receiving direct treatment eliminates the hassle of multiple visits to the doctor’s office.

The industry of Physical Therapy is booming! We all age, today there are over 80 million “Baby Boomers” in the US and according to AARP. 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every single day and make up a projected 70% of all U.S. disposable income over the next 5 years. This age group is more vulnerable to chronic and debilitating Musculoskeletal conditions such as knee pain, back pain and arthritis. As the population ages, the demand for physical therapy services will strengthen, making Physical Therapy Now that right franchise choice.

Even better; according the US Census Bureau in 2016 Millennials surpassed Baby Boomers as the largest living generation and largest workforce today. Millennials account for 84. 6 million and 1.4 trillion in spending power. They are just entering their prime consumption years. One thing that distinguishes this group is their concern for Health and Wellness. More than 84% of millennials exercise at least once per week. Many millennials are all about doing high-intensity workouts and exercises that are for mental and physical health but are not as conditioned as they should be and put excessive stress on the body.

Millennials are focused on convenient, personal care and that’s were PT NOW comes in. We engage these patients by preventing injuries, so they can continue to participate in the sports and fitness regimes they love. For this, Physical Therapy NOW has developed a “Recovery and Maintenance Program” a membership program that allows you access to Physical Therapist for corrective exercises, stretching and use of recovery equipment. If they require more in-depth care for injuries or pain, they can take advantage of the federal “Direct Access” law. Direct Access allows people to seek some level of Physical Therapy without the referral from physicians. PT Now seeks to increase patient census by providing multiple convenient locations to assist this young generation in achieving their fitness and wellness goals.

Convenience is not just for our patients, referring physicians and franchisees also benefit from our growing network. Physicians prefer to refer to group practices because they have multiple locations and accept a wide variety of insurances. Making us accessible and easy to work with takes the work out of the referring doctor from trying to figure out which insurance we accept or don’t. Because we are part of a group, we have easier access to be added to insurance contracts and provide our franchisees with an experienced department which handles Credentialing for them. Our practices have accesses to treat every kind of patient within different industries such as Commercial Insurance, Workers Comp, Medicare, Direct Access and Self Pay.  Additionally, because we are part of a group, we can negotiate better rates for our insurance contracts.

If you’re interested in learning more about this incredible rewarding opportunity, where you get to see patients progress and make a difference in their lives as well as be part of one of the fastest growing industries in healthcare, contact Sharmi Cattani today at Franchise@PhysicalTherapyNow.com

Together we will discuss how to get you started on the journey to franchise ownership where in as little as 3 months you can have the keys to your very own Physical Therapy NOW practice.

DON’T TAKE THAT PILL!

The opioid epidemic taking over the United States is like the black plague and growing.

In 2016 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that 64,070 people died from drug overdoses. Increase 21 % from 2015.

75% percent of all over doses are now caused by opioids. These opioids include pain medication you get at the hospital, primary care doctors and urgent cares.

Research by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), an independent research organization that focuses on “critical issues in policing,” puts those numbers into context.

According to the report, more Americans died from drug overdoses in 2016 than the number of American lives lost in the entirety of the Vietnam War, which totaled 58,200.

The group says it is focusing its efforts on the opioid epidemic because “despite the groundbreaking work that police, DEA and other agencies are doing, the epidemic is worsen.”

The report concluded that the year’s 64,070 drug fatalities outnumbered:

  • The 35,092 motor vehicle deaths in 2015.
  • AIDS-related deaths in the worst year of the AIDS crisis, when 50,628 people died in 1995.
  • The peak year for homicides in the U.S., when 24,703 people were murdered in 1991.
  • Suicides, which have been rising in the U.S. for nearly 30 years and totaled 44,193 in 2015.

The CDC identified

  • 5,466 deaths from heroin overdoses in 2016,
  • 20,145 deaths were caused by fentanyl or other synthetic opioids.

This is consistent with research suggesting that many people who become addicted to prescription painkillers often move on to heroin or synthetic opioids when it becomes too difficult to or expensive to keep obtaining prescription pills.

Congress, drug enforcement agencies, elected officials and doctors are trying to understand how to control these issues and seem to have a few solutions however they continue to mask the problem by offering drug centers, mental health facilities and even centers where you could get high for free offering clean needles and free heroin instead of finding what is causing the need for the drug. Many times people start the drugs because of a simple body injury, disorder or pain.  Fixing the root cause with Physical Therapy could help alleviate the pain and is a better solution than these addictive medications.

Studies show that the pain medications that many doctors prescribe have a euphoric effect similar to Heroin. When the doctors stop prescribing their medication, the patient will buy heroin which is easier to find and cheaper.   What the victims don’t understand is that heroin is more addictive and deadly.

I once went into a doctor’s office trying to promote my Physical Therapy business and the doctor bluntly told me he doesn’t prescribe physical therapy because he could get the same result with pain medication. I tried to inform him why Physical Therapy was a better solution but he was very resistant to the concept. At that time, I realized there are many doctors with the same bias. Medications do not heal the injury, disorder or the root cause. It simply masks it and your body will over time heal itself. What physical therapy does is to help your body heal itself in less amount of time.

Many doctors believe now that Physical Therapy is a much better solution than medication for pain. And the doctors and patients have realized how addictive and dangerous are these medications.

Physical Therapy has one goal, to return you to your optimal performance as you once were without any pain so you do not need any pain medications.

We are trained and educated at understanding many physical and neurological disorders at the molecular level and how to restore patient’s physical function.  It is quicker and safer to use the physical therapy with non-addictive pain medication to restore your physical abilities. Physical Therapist achieve these goals by performing many manual techniques combined with corrective exercises and some modalities and new technology that have been developed in recent years. So, before you take that pill for that neck, back or joint pain, think Physical Therapy Now first.

Physical Therapy Now has many centers in Miami Dade, Broward and Leon County.  Call us for a free telephone conference or to schedule your Physical Therapy Consultation today. Physical Therapy Now accepts most insurances.

Physical Therapy NOW Awards Practice to Franchise Vice President

Sharmi Cattani met Physical Therapy NOW CEO Andy Zapata while working as a Franchise Consultant looking for a Physical Therapy practice that had the systems developed to become the next successful franchise to add to her book of diverse franchise businesses. Impressed by Andy’s ability to view business in the long-term stand point, create value protocols to build a profitable business model and then replicated five times over she approached him about developing his business into a franchise model. At the time Andy was studying the franchise industry himself and decided to embark on the journey of training entrepreneurs like himself to own successful Physical Therapy Centers.

A year later, together with Andy, Sharmi awarded over 15 locations and developed an Executive Team to support franchisees. Franchisees of clinical and non-clinical backgrounds thrive and are able to fight against consolidation of private practice by coming together under one brand to operate at a lower cost, receive assistance in billing and collections and credentialing (acquiring insurance contracts). Also, even more exciting was the fact that the business model could easily be scaled into multiple locations for a franchise owner once they understood the brand.

Sharmi decided she wanted to follow in her mentor’s footsteps and open a practice for herself. Understanding that the most important aspect of the PT NOW business model is to have a franchisee that would follow the operation, marketing and administrative training and systems she looked to her older sister knowing the entrepreneurial apple never falls far from the tree. Cynthia Pavon had over 20 years of executive level administration experience. She was also studying Health Service Administration at the time. Sharmi explained to Cynthia how she could work hard to grow her own business in an industry that is recession resistant and poised for growth. They also partnered with longtime friend Rommel Brioso a business major who could see the benefits of investing a proven business model. Within 3 months they opened the doors to they’re Physical Therapy NOW center and with the support of the franchise became the fastest growing franchisee for Physical Therapy NOW. Cynthia operates the practice and the administrator and managing partner using the PT NOW business model as a vehicle to achieve the results she wants. Physical Therapy Now provides supervision and departments to answer and guide her as she grows the business. Because of the ongoing assistance and training Cynthia and her partners have gained operational expertise otherwise acquired through trial and error helping avoid costly mistakes. The next natural step in their business plan is expansion. The PT NOW FIU Team are thrilled to see how quickly they can consider opening they’re second location.

Training With Professionals

Parents and caregivers should ensure that children are under the guidance of a coach or athletic trainer to learn the proper techniques and form needed to be safe in the sport or activity in which they’re participating. They should have the appropriate safety gear and know how to use it. It’s important that the adults in a child’s life set a good example by adhering to the same rules.

Physical therapy can help children avoid injuries in the following ways:

  • Warm up and stretching exercises
  • Prevent overtraining
  • Conditioning
  • Teaching control
  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Build strength and endurance
  • Appropriate safety equipment

Some activities and sports are extremely dangerous and pose a high-risk of injury, prompting experts to recommend that parents not allow their children to participate in them. They can cause more than pulled muscles and broken bones. They can result in neck and back injuries, along with concussions that can have long-lasting effects. Those activities include football, boxing, driving and riding on motorized “toys,” and using trampolines.

Overuse and overtraining injuries are common in children and adolescent whose bones are still growing and developing. Children need at least two days off every week from practicing sports and two to three months away from the sport each year. It’s essential to maintain proper hydration to avoid fatigue and muscle cramps.

Avoid Children’s Injuries Before They Happen with Physical Therapy

As children develop and explore their environment, they’re subject to a wide variety of injuries. Some of those wounds and injuries can be serious and even have life-changing effects. Physical therapy offers the means for parents and caregivers to reduce the risk of injuries before they occur.

Injuries are a part of life as children grow, but appropriate preparation can help minimize those injuries and their severity. The adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is just as applicable today as it was when the saying was first coined. A screening and evaluation by a skilled physical therapist can identify potential problems before they can result in an injury.

A physical therapy screening will discover any underlying deficits in strength, agility or movement that might prevent a child from fully participating in a great many activities. If a problem is discovered, the physical therapist can provide treatments to remedy and manage the problem in ways that still enables a child to be active.

Physical Therapy for a Lifetime of Activity

Your physical therapist can provide a comprehensive exam and evaluation to detect any gait or bone conditions that might contribute to an injury. If a problem is identified, gait training can be initiated to ensure bones are straight and your child moves in safe and appropriate ways.

Children can develop behaviors such as putting too much weight on the sides of their feet that can be corrected with physical therapy. Your physical therapist can provide a wide variety of exercises to build control and core strength that lessens the potential of a risk from fast stops, starts and turns.

A physical conditioning program developed by your physical therapist will factor in your child’s age, ability, strengths and weaknesses, any prior injuries, and fitness level. An exercise program will be individualized to improve endurance, balance and coordination that will also help in his/her other activities in everyday life.

Your child will learn warm-up and stretching exercises to limber up before any activity. Your physical therapist can provide nutritional recommendations for health and even clothing and material options that will keep your youngster cool and keep them from overheating.

They key to reducing the risk of injuries is to ensure your child has no physical problems that will hinder their development, anticipating difficulties, and expert instruction and treatment by a physical therapist specializing in pediatrics. Your physical therapist can help establish a culture of safety for your child that will allow them to enjoy a lifetime of physical activities and an active lifestyle.
